Obama Campaign Smacks Down Republican attack on Obama's Patriotism

Wed Jul 23, 2008 at 12:57:59 PM PDT

The McCain campaign has been attacking Senator Obama's patriotism in various ways.  Here's a new ad from the Republican National Committee attacking Barack Obama for voting against funding the troops in May 2007.

"There are few votes as important as funding our men and women in uniform. But when our military needed necessary resources, Barack Obama failed to stand up."

The Obama campaign response, after the fold.

How To Run a Voter Registration Drive Hotlist

Wed Jul 23, 2008 at 12:40:36 PM PDT

This is a diary about how to run a voter registration drive. Specifically, it’s about how I run the all-volunteer voter registration drive for the Travis County Democratic Party’s Coordinated Campaign. It is intended to help all of you set up your own voter registration efforts, whether it’s you and a friend on a street corner, or a group of eager individuals at a community event. Read it, print out the text, email the link, however you think it can help. The key is for everyone to start registering voters.

To conduct a voter registration drive, you need three things:

  • Volunteers
  • Locations
  • Supplies

I’m going to cover each of these three aspects below. In the coming weeks, my fellow voter registration all-star casperr and I will post a few more diaries to help you all get involved with voter registration.

This is good timing, because today marks a major milestone in our Austin Vote for Change efforts: tonight we will register our 1000th voter. More on that, too.

Andrea Mitchell...this one's for YOU!

Apologies upfront for this being a fairly short diary but I am sick to death of Andrea Mitchell.

Ridiculous - CBS "defends" favorable McCain edit

Wed Jul 23, 2008 at 10:52:25 AM PDT

Cross-posted at Strategy 08.

CBS is in defense mode over its cut-and-paste McCain interview, where different answers were substituted for different questions.

"As all news organizations do with extended interviews, last night’s Obama and McCain interviews were edited to fit the available time and to give viewers a fair expression of the candidates' major differences,"  CBS spokeswoman Jennifer Farley emailed. "The full transcript and video were and still are available at cbsnews.com."

The problem is, of course, that they didn't simply edit the response, they cut in an entirely different answer.  They lied.  And they presented this lie to the American people as fact.

Bi-Partisan?: The DSCC responds to Gordon Smith

Wed Jul 23, 2008 at 08:32:56 AM PDT

Yesterday I wrote about how Gordon Smith and the Oregon Republican party had released a web ad and website smearing Jeff Merkley's record.  Today, the DSCC fired back with a brilliant ad nailing Gordon Smith on the war on Iraq.  See more below the jump...

Update: McCain Responds to Gaffe; A Surge before THE Surge after Canceling Pres Avail

Wed Jul 23, 2008 at 08:26:22 AM PDT

The Gaffe-a-thon machine that has become John McCain just cancelled it's Press availability today and it's been noted by Politico with a nice detailed run down of just why...

He hasn't explained what he meant by juggling the timeline on the surge and Awakening; whether he meant that Obama was deliberately selling out the country; whether he shares his campaign's grievance with the press; or what he thinks of his staff's genocide-themed attack.

So while Barack Obama has the guts to go into Ramallah to discuss Isreal/Palestine, McCain can't stand a few hot questions from the press in Pennsylvania....

Remind me again whose the Brave War Hero?  Looks like a Chickenhawk to me!  Then again maybe there was fear that only 2 reporters would show up.

Obama Press Conf Israel, New McCain Lie about Surge, Post CBS

Wed Jul 23, 2008 at 07:46:41 AM PDT

Senator Obama is holding a live Press conference in the town of Sderot Israel now.

He is being hosted by the Mayor of Sderot. The town is at the center of the fighting, and has received over 2600 missle attacks so far this year (that's whats behind Obama; spent missle shells).

But, further below (in the body), are the latest McCain Shenanigans. McCain, has altered his Surge story again. Today, in a speech, he blurred the lines between the Surge, and the Sunni Awakening, with out every calling it by name, but prasing General Petraeus's "new strategy" as a hero

Now to Obama: Dressed in a white open collar shirt, with no suit jacket.

He looks, and sounds so Presidential.

Obama is not picking the questions. That's being done by an Israeli (and so far most of the questions are being asked by Israeli media).

But these guys, are trying to really ask tough questions, or put Obama in a pickle. He's truly walking a minefield before he leaves for Europe. The haters (like A. Mitchell) are gonna really look for gaffes here.

This is being broadcast on MSNBC and CNN right now.

Here's the webstream, for those with no TV ascess. http://www.cnn.com/...

McCain Campaign Accuses Obama Of Supporting Genocide

Wed Jul 23, 2008 at 06:59:25 AM PDT

Wow, can you say desperate? Ben Smith at Politico reports that John McCain's campaign just issued a post attacking Obama, calling him a flip-flopper on genocide.

Will CBS make Katie offer an apology? or resign?

Wed Jul 23, 2008 at 06:51:00 AM PDT

It is no wonder CBS is last in the evening news.  I sure the hell don't watch it.  If this whole cover up had been an Obama cover up, we would hear about it for the next two weeks.  Is it my imagination or do Democrats have to run a flawless campaign while the GOP gets a free pass?

I have given up on watching almost all evening news, I randomly will watch the first 10 minutes of NBC to see what "Dumbed Down" America is being exposed to by the corporations and the Kool Aid they want the public to drink.  I have watched John McCain get away with gaffe after gaffe and nobody covers his incompetence and the fact that his mind has obviously slowed down (repectively) with his age.

John McCain has slowly erroded Obama's lead in the electoral math where Obama had almost a 100pt. electoral projected lead a couple of months ago.

The bottom line, the media is manipulating the public just like they have since George W. Bush won the first and second time, Just like they did when we went into Iraq, and just like they are now....

Berlin is Abuzz over Obama's Visit

Wed Jul 23, 2008 at 01:47:35 AM PDT

Berlin is abuzz about Senator Obama’s upcoming speech on Thursday 7:00 PM local time.

How many folks will come to see the messiah as he has been called by some journalists over here? Many press outlets quoted a city government official’s estimate of 10,000 to one million people. Wow, that is so precise! It seems that nobody else dares to publish an estimate. It could be a comparatively small gathering. Or it could be a huge gathering like when President Kennedy said "Ich bin ein Berliner."

Exposed CBS Reponds to HuffoPo and KO [UPDATE2]

Tue Jul 22, 2008 at 10:07:09 PM PDT

Crossposted at Strategy08.

John McCain has some 'splaning to do:

During a CBS interview on Tuesday, John McCain made a stone cold error on a subject about which he claims expert knowledge: the "surge" strategy in Iraq. In an interview with anchor Katie Couric, the Arizona Republican said, inaccurately, that the surge strategy was responsible for the much-touted "Anbar Awakening," in which Sunni sheiks turned against Al Qaeda, helping in turn to reduce violence in the country.

Wow -- Mullen Agrees with Obama (from tonight!)

Tue Jul 22, 2008 at 09:01:04 PM PDT

This little bit of gold could not be more buried in an otherwise excellent WaPo piece for tomorrow entitled "Obama Shifts the Foreign Policy Debate". But two shockers from the piece:

  1. Mullen -- the same Joint Chiefs Mullen who made news on Sunday for telling Fox that a timeline is "dangerous" -- told PBS today that he agrees with Obama that Afghanistan is a major problem and the only way to get more troops there is to take them from Iraq.

and

  1. He said that he has strict priorities from the Commander-in-Chief to focus on Iraq first and foremost. Afghanistan is second.

Passage from WaPo:

McCain's Tuzla moment

Tue Jul 22, 2008 at 08:44:22 PM PDT

Marc Ambinder, Spencer Ackerman and Keith Olbermann have done a wonderful job exposing John McCain's shocking distortion of Iraq's history.

But how does this affect McCain politically? Is it just a gaffe like Iraq-Pakistan's border?

No way.

This is John McCain's Tuzla moment. It's about the self-aggrandizing lying.

New Rasmussen Colorado Poll: Obama 49, McCain 42

Tue Jul 22, 2008 at 03:08:17 PM PDT

If this poll has already been diaried, somebody let me know and I'll delete it.  However, I ran a quick serach and couldn't find anything.

So take this all for what's it's worth.

In Colorado, Barack Obama leads Republican John McCain by seven percentage points, 49% to 42%. However, when leaners are included, McCain is more competitive and pulls to within three points, 50% to 47%.

A month ago, the race was a toss-up, but two months ago Obama led by six.

Rasmussen CO Poll:  This telephone survey of 500 Likely Voters was conducted by Rasmussen Reports July 21, 2008. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

Veterans Respond to McCain's "Obama Wants to Lose" Remark

Tue Jul 22, 2008 at 02:48:39 PM PDT

While Barack Obama spends the week in Afghanistan and Iraq, speaking to throngs of cheering troops and diplomats, John McCain is accusing the likely Democratic nominee of wanting to "lose" the war in Iraq.  Here’s what he said today:

MCCAIN: It seems to me that Senator Obama would rather lose a war in order to win a political campaign.

NN08 followup: New Mexico Dems GET the Netroots w/ Poll

Tue Jul 22, 2008 at 02:00:29 PM PDT

Crossposted at New Mexico FBIHOP

A few weeks back, Marjorie Childress had a great article about net neutrality over at the Independent (the other place I write and actually get paid for).

Something interesting that I remember this weekend was seeing which candidates were the most net-friendly.  I don't mean just showing up and glad-handing at Netroots Nation or sending staff, but also understanding net neutrality.

And the divide between Democrats and Republicans was as clear as the digital divide between the middle-class urbans and lower-class rural New Mexicans.

The New Mexico Independent was curious about what those who are running for federal office in New Mexico think about the issue. As it turned out, Democratic contenders were all informed on the topic and knew where they stood. Conversely, none of the Republicans running for Congress responded to the inquiry. They either declined to comment because of the complexity of the issue or declined all comment. First Congressional District candidate Darren White refused to respond despite several requests.
